DUTCH OBEDIENCE SOCIETY OBEDIENCE SHOW held at Bleiswijk on Saturday 6th December 2008 Many thanks to the Dutch Obedience Society for the invitation to judge at this show, held this year in a previously unused part of the Bleiswijk complex. Our hosts for the weekend were Peter and Ivonne and we once again had a lovely weekend with them – they made us feel very much at home. Thanks also to Juta and Frans who taxied us to and from the show and joined us for the evening meal with their daughter Isabella to celebrate Frans’s “special” birthday. Thanks to all – we had a great time. The show was a little on the small side but this once again gave us time to chat to people and get up to date with all the latest “obedience” news in Holland. Our ring stewards noted below and our table/scoreboard stewards (Juta and Benie) all performed their tasks faultlessly and we are indebted to them for their help throughout the Show. Thanks also to Brian McGovern for helping out as scent decoys in B and C - this all helped with the smooth running of the show. Finally, special thanks to Peter and his team of stay stewards.
Our results are as follows: PRE-BEGINNERS 5 Entries Ring Steward – Krist Crommen This was a very small class and I was quite surprised when the first competitor said she would train. In actual fact she did not have to do much to help the dog except when it came to its stays. Hope you sort this because you have a lovely dog. 1st 70¾ pts. Kees Slinkman and his Australian Kelpie QUINCY OF THE TWO CHESTNUTS. I did not realise until later that this was the first time Kees and Quincy had been to a dog show and what an introduction. One or two errors in the heelwork but worthy of 1st place. Many congratulations and here’s to a successful future. 2nd 66½ pts. Gerda v.d. Pluijm and her Bernese Mountain Dog BOBBY. Heelfree much better than on the lead but Gerda thinks that Bobby is lazy after dinner!!! Who knows? Well done on this place. 3rd 55 pts. Angeline Wayop Beekink and her Border Collie FLY AWAY SKIP. Not a good day today for Skip, he seemed very distracted in the heelwork and then forgot he was doing the sit stay. Better luck at the next show. Judge: Shelagh Page
BEGINNERS 13 Entries Ring Steward - Martine Verhoeven 1st 96½ pts. Elly Gebraad and her Gos d’Atura ESPERANZA NOA MERZA. An excellent round from Elly and Noa to secure their second Beginner win. A little work needed on the first step of heelwork but after that it was tidy and stylish, just what is needed to move into Novice. Well done and good luck for next season. Enjoy your obedience. 2nd 95½ pts. Heidi Demon and her Border Collie BONNIEBLUE GODARCY. Very similar to above, a very neat round with only slight change of position responsible for loss of marks in both sets of heelwork. Well done, that red one will soon be yours. 3rd 93½ pts. Adrienne Zuidweg and her Border Collie BANJER. Heelwork needs to be tidier for good set exercises secured this place for Banjer and handler. Tighten up heelwork position and turns and you will progress quickly. Good luck. 4th 93 pts. Petra Frijling and her Gos d’Atura SENNA. From the same litter as the winner and could easily have been on the same marks except for loss of concentration in the sit stay. After the hesitation at the start, as with Noa, the heelwork was accurate and stylish. Two wins at the last show, I understand, so good luck at the next one. 5th 92¼ pts. Angeline Wayop Beekink and her Border Collie FLY AWAY SKIP. Wide working in heelwork cost the majority of the marks. If this was sorted, because of Fly’s excellent set exercises, winning wouldn’t be a problem. Good luck at future shows. 6th 90¾ pts. Karin Stegmeijer and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel PRONKJEWAIL VAN’T LOUG HOAGY. Hoagy’s heelwork outside the ring was brilliant but he had other ideas when he was inside the ropes. He is quite capable and well trained so keep at it. Good set exercises and worthy of being in the line up. Well done. 7th 89 pts. Gerda v.d. Pluijm and her Bernese Mountain Dog BOBBY. A reasonable round with a big dog but heelwork needs to be much more attentive. Well done. Judge: Shelagh Page
CLASS A 20 Entries Ring Steward – Cees Groen 1st 140½ pts. Krist Crommen and his Border Collie JAZZ IT UP V.D. BENVENIDA’S JOY. Dixy is a lovely working little bitch who has plenty more to give. Krist needs to go into the ring as a confident handler and show her off instead of being ultra careful. Very nice, stylish heelwork and excellent set exercises made them very worthy winners and, as this was their last A, I wish them good luck in B. Enjoy her, she is lovely. 2nd 144 pts. Helen Braak and her White Shepherd Bitch QUIT-KUMA THE LOVELY WHITE SHEPHERD. A brilliant round but unfortunately Helen managed to lose a lot of marks herself today and this made the difference between 1st and 2nd. Something to think about as she is definitely something special. Well done. 3rd 143½ pts. Rineke Smit and her Australian Kelpie TIKA JILLAROO ULURU. Again a neat partnership but slight loss of position in heelwork and recall was costly. Should get the red one soon. Good luck. 4th 143¼ pts. Frans de Groot and his Goldie QUILLA. Nice working attitude – tail never stopped wagging – from Quilla but needs tightening on the heelwork. Again excellent set exercises secured this place but quite capable of winning. Congratulations. 5th 141 pts. Sofie Greven and her Border Collie DETANIA HERFST ROOS. Bits and pieces on all exercises soon added up but Sofie and Roos were still in there with a shout at the end of the day. Well done. 6th 139¾ pts. Marjan v. Elst and her Border Collie ME AND MY BEST FRIEND OLE McFEE. Forward working in heelwork, although much improved, and a messy scent moved this pair down the line but Marjan was pleased with the performance. Good luck. 7th 133 pts. Yolande Hartman and her Kooikerhondje BOUNCER. A very messy scent moved this pair down the places. Sort this problem, and work on tightening the heelwork position and you will do well. Congratulations on getting in the line up.
CLASS B 12 Entries Ring Steward – Guus Scholten Scent Decoy – Brian McGovern 1st 190½ pts. Monique Magnus and her Border Collie MISTER ROONEY V. BENVENIDA’S JOY. Rooney is coming on really well and produced some very nice heelwork, the best in the class in fact. He is stylish and well-motivated – don’t wait for him on the turns though Monique (this seems to be a problem prevalent not only in Holland but back in the UK also) because he really doesn’t need it. His sendaway was excellent, just a little keen to get back to you!! A very positive scent clinched first place with plenty to spare. A lovely end to the year for you Monique – plenty of time ahead to get his C work up to scratch. This was a very well deserved win and I would like to wish this team much success in the years ahead. 2nd 190¼ pts. Ineke Happée and her Border Collie BRIGHT SHE SHALL BE V.D. WILBAM. A good effort from Shallbe but at the moment left turns appear to be a bit of a problem with position not quite being held and a bit of “tucking” at the slow and normal paces. Good set exercises ensured a good overall result. There’s plenty to work on here Ineke and she’s certainly worth the effort so go for it. Well done. 3rd 187¾ pts. Krist Crommen and her Border Collie JAZZ IT UP V. BENVENIDA’S JOY. Krist and Dixy tackled the test really well which resulted in them going into scent with a narrow lead. Scent was expensive however and spoilt their chances today. This is certainly a team to watch for the future and success will be theirs before long I feel sure. Best wishes for your future shows. 4th 177¾ pts. Rineke Smit and her Australian Kelpie TIKA JILLAROO ULURU. Tika tried really hard but chances of a higher place today were ruined by a messy retrieve and a break in the Sit Stay. Will do better I’m sure. 6th 172 pts. Anja Smit and her Border Collie ARMATI’S CUTE CUBEY. Some expensive errors in Cubey’s heelwork today. Basically good set exercises and without a doubt the best scent of the day. Keep trying. CLASS C 21 Entries Ring Steward – Hans Bilius Scent Decoy – Brian McGovern 1st 289¼ pts. Mia Bosschaart and her Working Sheepdog MAMAMIA’S TYKE. Mia and Tyke were certainly “up for it” today and turned in a performance reminiscent of their fantastic win under me in the Crufts Obedience World Cup earlier in the year. I commented at that time that I always felt that Tyke under-achieved. Well thankfully that is certainly all in the past now. This was a cracking performance and victory was sealed with a superb scent. Congratulations on this excellent and well-deserved win Mia. Hope to see you competing in the UK again in 2009. 3rd 283½ pts. Trudy Groenenboom and her Working Sheepdog COLLIEWOOD CRAZY LEGS GUINNESS. Guinness was a bit loose in heelwork today but is fairly new to C. Good “sets” included excellent Distant Control and a confident scent. You know what you have to work on Trudy – good luck with him. 4th 279¼ pts. Steven Vannieuwenhuyse and his Border Collie BYTCHEK ESQUIRE. Bugsy won his first B under me at ’s-Gravenpolder just 2 years ago and is making his presence felt in C now. Heelwork definitely could be tighter but a missed DC position ultimately meant they were relegated to this position. Well done Steven. 5th 266 pts. Bernou ter Voorde and her Border Collie TREMYNYDD FACH GWENNETHY. It’s difficult to believe that it’s almost 6 years since Bernou and Gwenny won their first Novice under me at this same venue. Today they were unfortunately nearer the other end of the line-up but I don’t think that they’ve been in C for very long. Good luck for the future. 6th Margreet Mijnsbergen and her Golden Retriever FLEUR OF THE CHARMING STEAD. Well I still think Fleur is a super dog Margreet but I honestly believe you need to show more confidence in her. Another scent failure today unfortunately. Best heelwork of the day came from Danielle de Jonge and MIKEY who, along with Guus Scholten’s Gio will soon be gracing the big ring in the Crufts Obedience Championships. May I wish them both the very best for the big occasion. Finally I would like to make special mention of a retirement today – Monique Magnus’s lovely Border Collie STILLMOOR MY GUY MISTER DARCY (Darcy to his friends). I was honoured that Monique chose today for Darcy’s last time in the ring as together they’d won their very first Novice under me at the Championships way back in 2001. Here’s hoping for a long, healthy and happy retirement. Judge – Roy Page |
